Global Forestry Services (GFS) is a company that functions to support market-oriented solutions to improving forest management and the sustainability of forest-based industries. GFS is dedicated to support efforts to curb Climate Change through programs that generate carbon credits from Carbon Sequestration and Avoided Deforestation. GFS has established new investment services to develop and market projects on forest restoration and plantation development as a low risk and environmentally friendly Green Investment. GFS mission is to provide technical support in forestry organization to meet international certification standards as well as management services for forest rehabilitation and investment. GFS aims to provide solutions to assist in the demonstration that products are responsibly sourced and traceable back to legal origin that will comply with requirements for EU Timber Regulations and Lacey Act. The following is a summary list of projects conducted by GFS Group:

Current Projects:

Title : Independent Monitoring of RIL & Sabah Timber Legality Standard Principles 1-6
Dates : January 2015 – Dec 2019
Status : Current Project
Client : Sabah Forestry Department – Sabah, Malaysia.
Description : GFS conducts independent monitoring for Reduced Impact Logging & legal compliance to the Sabah Timber Legality Standard P1-6 for ALL forests, manufacturing, trade and export companies. GFS conducts monthly field assessment for verification of compliance of forest management & operations to the Legal Standard (Appendix A: Principles 1-4 dated 13 Nov 2013) as well as for Reduced Impact Logging (RIL) for current harvesting operations.   Monitoring legal compliance also includes verification of all manufacturing, trade & export companies for Sabah TLAS Principles 5-6.

 

Title : Environmental Economist, Financial Data Management & Biophysical Data
Dates : November 2015 – November 2016
Status : Current Project
Client : UNDP & Sabah Forestry Department – Sabah, Malaysia.
Description : The objective of the project is to bring the land-uses in the connecting landscape and protected areas under a common and integrated management umbrella strategy in order to mainstream biodiversity, ecosystem functions and resilience, while enabling ongoing sustainable uses.
Activities includes:

  • Collect, and expand availability and ease of use of, baseline bio-physical data regarding the demonstration site
  • Specify key data gaps that would act as barriers to project implementation
  • Prepare detailed technical overview of required additional data gathering and monitoring actions
  • Identify, improve access and ease of use of existing and future financial data related to demonstration landscape
  • Prepare a description of bio-physical data required by the project
  • Identify and develop a strategy for filling data gaps, and
  • Assess the total economic value of alternative land use scenarios and ecosystems services
  • Provide scoping on optimal mix of revenue generations mechanisms, and
  • Indicate funding gaps to be leveraged against investments to be raised internally through co-finance and/or through the market

 

Title : Legal Verification Services
Dates : October 2012 – Sept 2015
Status : Current Project
Client : Ta Ann Holdings Bhd – Sarawak, Malaysia.
Description : The scope of this project is to provide independent verification of legal compliance by Ta Ann forestry concessions in Sarawak, Malaysia against the GFS legal standard (LVS 005a Legal Requirements v06 Feb 2014 = Sarawak).
The timber licenses in the scope of VL verification would include 3 forest concessions areas:

  • T/3135 – Pasin Sdn. Bhd. – 49,858 ha
  • T/0560 – Raplex Sdn. Bhd. – 72,251 ha
  • T/3491 – Tanjong Manis Holdings Sdn. Bhd. – 125,000 ha
    And 2 licensed areas for planted forests;

  • LPF/0010 – 108,125 ha (Dec 1998)
  • LPF/0040 – 197,250 ha (Oct 2005)

 

Title : Legal Verification Services
Dates : Sept 2014 – Continual

Client : Samling Plywood Miri Sdn Bhd – Sarawak, Malaysia
Description : The scope of this project is to provide independent verification of legal compliance by Samling forestry concessions in Sarawak, Malaysia against the GFS legal standard (LVS 005a Legal Requirements v06 Feb 2014 = Sarawak).The scope of work conducted included Forest Timber License Area T/0413 consisting of 204,000 ha of natural tropical forests

 

Title : Legal Verification Services
Dates : Oct 2015 – Continual
Status : Current Project
Client : Shin Yang Sdn Bhd – Sarawak, Malaysia
Description : The scope of this project is to provide independent verification of legal compliance by Shin Yang forestry concession in Sarawak, Malaysia against the GFS legal standard (LVS 005a Legal Requirements v06 Feb 2014 = Sarawak).The scope of work conducted included Forest Timber License Area T/3228 consisting of 71,122 ha of natural tropical forests.

 

Title : Wood Tracking Program
Dates : Oct 2015 – Continual
Status : Current Project
Client : Private wood processing and timber trading companies (100+ companies)
Description : GFS provides evaluation and monitoring of manufacturers and traders under the Wood Tracking Program (WTP) based on a formal Chain of Custody (COC) systems (Standard WTP-005 or local standard) to track the material used in wood products are verified legal and traceable back to the forest or plantation.Participating companies must have a formal risk assessment of all suppliers to evaluate legal origin of raw material. All suppliers that are NOT considered low risk must be verified legal based on field visits to the site to document compliance to legal requirements (LVS-005 or local standard). Companies under a GFS Wood Tracking Program are 2 times annually (or as deemed necessary) to verify continual compliance to the COC system.
